About Us

Dance Centers is a dance studio for children and adults in Reading, Pennsylvania. We provide instruction for ages 2 through teen in all forms of dance, including specialty classes like tap, ballet, jazz. hip hop and more. We also offer adult dance fitness classes for various skill levels. Dance Centers was founded in 1979 based on the principles of quality and experienced dance instruction. We believe all can benefit from dance training, whether or not they have professional ambitions.

Mission Statement

To provide students of all ages with the skills they need to enjoy the art of dance for a lifetime. We don't stop dancing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop dancing.

Michele Schartel — dance center in Reading, PA
 

Owner, Michele Schartel


Michele has been an instructor in all forms of dance and specialty classes, plus musical theater choreographer in Berks and surrounding counties for 49 years. She is also a Dance Competition judge for the past 17 years for David Blight's “Talent Olympics” competitions in the Pocono's twice a year. She also judges at 2 different locations for Cathy Tubolino's competition “Dance Expressions” in Pennsylvania and Delaware and Mary Ann Christopher's “Rhythms & Dance Competition” in Voohrhees and Eatontown, New Jersey. Michele is also a judge for the past 10 years with Gloria Dillon's “Performing Arts Alliance Competition” in King of Prussia, PA .
 
Michele attends numerous dance workshops and conventions each year, and is a believer of keeping the curriculum fresh and up to date. Most often, she is the lady behind the desk. Some of her students have gone onto Broadway shows, Touring Companies, Danced in Disney and on Royal Caribbean Cruise lines. Ms. Michele choreographs and teaches classes, and is active on the workshop and seminar circuit.
 

Claudia Schadler-Doung


Claudia is a veteran of Dance Centers having spent 25 years as a student with Ms. Michele. This is Claudia’s 12th year of teaching, where she enjoys teaching tap, jazz and lyrical. She studied at Temple University where she was a member of both dance and cheer teams. Claudia was also the cheerleading and dance coach at Albright College, in addition to being an AACA certified coach and a UCA staff judge. Currently, she is a member of the musical production team at Conrad Weiser High School and Middle School. Outside of dance, Ms. Claudia works in the Finance Department in the Wilson School District. She resides in Wernersville with her husband Noel, and sons Mathew and Christopher.

Lauren Schwartz


Miss Lauren is entering her 9th year of teaching at the studio as instructor for ages 2 through 6. She teaches a Mommy and Me class, along with the Twinkle Babies, and both levels of the Twinkle Stars curriculum. She enjoys teaching the beginner levels and loves watching her students find their passion for dance. When Lauren isn't teaching, she enjoys mastering her technique in the various classes offered at Dance Centers. She particularly likes the Advanced level Tap class and the new phenomenon, CIZE! This will be Lauren's 24th year with the studio, and she can't see herself anywhere else! Outside of the studio, Lauren works for a local high school in the special education department. When she's not dancing, Lauren enjoys traveling with her family, reading and working outside in the garden.
 
 
 

Helen Veet


Helen has been dancing since she was 5 years old. She teaches Tap, Jazz, Ballet and Hip Hop for all ages, and has been involved with musical theatre choreography at Berks Catholic High School. She has been a judge at "Talent Olympics" competitions in the Poconos for the past 2 1/2 years, and she has attended many dance instructor seminars in New York City, New Jersey and New Hampshire. She has taken masters classes with the Rockettes, cast of Legally Blonde, cast of Kinky Boots, Lane Napper, Andy Blankenbeuller, Chris Judd, Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, Brian Freidman, Germaine Salsberg and Shea Sulivan. Helen is also a Registered Nurse with Optum in the Medicare division.

Dawn Mohn


Dawn has been teaching dance for 22 years, and at Dance Centers for 19 of those years. Her dance journey began at the age of 3 years old, studying Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Acrobatic, Lyrical, and Hip Hop. Dawn has performed in many dance competitions, winning many 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. In 1985, at the age of 10, she won Miss Pre-Teen Talent. She has studied with Tremaine, Monsters of Hip Hop just to name a few. Dawn is a mother of 4 -- sons Cobie, Branson, and Garrett, and daughter Brianna. When she's not at the studio, she works as a support aide at Twin Valley School District and is a certified freelance makeup artist of her own Metamorphosis Artistry. Dawn believes dance is a way to express yourself in a fun and positive way. It’s easy to learn the dance steps, the true challenge is bringing them to life through your energy and style. Dance is about fun and loving what you are doing!
 

Kitty Vogel


Kitty has been dancing since she was 5 years old. After finishing a 3 year student teacher course, she taught for Marie Shaw School of Dance. She also taught at Rochelle’s School of Dance in Boyertown for 33 years. She has been with Dance Centers for 6 years now where she excels in Ballet and Acrobatics., Kitty also teaches Tap, Jazz and the Adult Ballet Stretch & Tone. She attended dance workshops at Cedar Crest College and in Philadelphia and New York City.

Becka Malanios


Becka is a Dance Centers alumni and loves all kinds of dance, with tap being her favorite. She is a long standing member of the Berks and Montgomery County Community Theatre as an actor, singer, and dancer. Becka is the current choreographer for Exeter Junior High School and Twin Valley High School musicals. She resides in the Birdsboro area with her husband Chris, son Niko, and daughters Lorna and Zoe.
